Methods for Effectively Navigating Leadership

By Jon Corns

Having worked extensively as a business consultant within SME businesses, I’ve experienced the transformative power of leadership in building trust, motivation and sustainable growth.

One of the fundamental aspects of my role revolves around being a trusted sounding board for owners and managers. So, within this article, I aim to shed light on the significance of effective leadership from the experiences I have gained, highlighting two key approaches that have proven instrumental in my work.

1. Confronting Poor Behaviour Head-On

One of the key responsibilities of a leader, whether within an SME or a multinational corporation, is to address poor behaviour promptly and decisively. I often encounter situations where problematic behaviour goes unaddressed, leading to a toxic work environment and hindering productivity.

Ignoring poor behaviour is not an option. Instead, you need to address issues head-on. This involves identifying the root causes which could stem from communication breakdowns, conflicting goals or lack of accountability. Whichever the case, it’s essential you implement strategies to rectify it quickly. Whether it requires mediation, coaching or disciplinary action, I work closely with the leadership team to ensure that problematic behaviour is addressed effectively.

For instance, I recently worked with a company where interdepartmental conflicts were significantly impacting productivity. By facilitating open discussions and implementing conflict resolution techniques, we were able to address underlying issues and create a more collaborative work culture. The result was not only improved teamwork but also a noticeable increase in overall productivity and employee satisfaction.

2. Empowering Engaged Staff

In addition to addressing challenges, effective leadership involves empowering engaged staff members to thrive. Recognising and leveraging the strengths of individuals can significantly enhance their job satisfaction and performance. Engaged employees are the backbone of any successful business, as they bring passion, commitment and innovative ideas to the table. However, without the right support and resources, their potential may remain untapped.

As a consultant, I prioritise empowering engaged staff members by providing them with the necessary tools, training and career aspirations. This may involve developing tailored development programmes, encouraging a culture of continuous learning, or implementing mentorship initiatives.

For example, one company I supported had a group of highly motivated employees who expressed a desire to take on more responsibilities but lacked the necessary skills and guidance. Through personalised coaching sessions and one-to-one mentoring from an already skilled team member, we equipped them with the right knowhow and the confidence to deliver. Not only did this boost their morale and loyalty, but it also contributed to a more skilled and resilient workforce capable of adapting to evolving market demands.

The Impact of Effective Leadership

The cumulative effect of these leadership approaches is profound and tangible. By addressing both the challenges and opportunities, enables you to cultivate a culture of trust, motivation and resilience.

As a consultant, my ultimate goal is to support businesses in adopting effective leadership practices that not only deliver short-term results but also lay the foundation for long-term growth and sustainability. However, it’s essential to realise that leadership is an ongoing journey, and my role extends beyond implementation to providing guidance and support as businesses navigate their path to success.

While my role may be temporary, the impact resonates long after I’ve left the company, leaving behind a legacy of positive change and continuous improvement. If you have any questions or need help with your leadership skills, get in touch or link below or message me on LinkedIn.
