The Value of Long-Term Partnerships

By Jon Corns

Lately, I’ve been taking some time to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve had working alongside numerous businesses. My career as a business consultant has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs, and I’ve learned so much along the way. It’s been immensely rewarding to witness businesses find their footing again and embark on a journey towards stability and success.

However, there have been moments that have left me questioning the long-term impact of my work. In some cases, despite our best efforts, profitability has declined after my engagement with a business has ended – which is very disheartening. This has prompted me to take a deeper look at the importance of long-term partnerships with external business experts.

The Importance of Continuous Improvement

An ongoing, long-term partnership with an experienced business consultant brings many benefits, not least of which is keeping you focused and on track. From my experience, maintaining a consistent focus on your core business disciplines is crucial if you are going to sustain long-term profitability. Mastering the basics and executing them consistently is often more important than finding a quick solution.

Common Pitfalls Hindering Long-Term Success

My background in LEAN principles has taught me the significance of continuous improvement. There is always room to grow and refine strategies, but some fundamental business disciplines must become ingrained habits to ensure your lasting success.

As I reflect on the patterns I’ve observed, I’ve noticed some common pitfalls that hinder long-term success:

  • Constantly changing objectives without a clear direction.
  • Searching for shortcuts instead of focusing on sustainable growth.
  • Prioritising sales at the expense of margins and overheads.
  • Being outcome-focused rather than focusing on the processes that drive results.
  • Reacting emotionally to external factors, creating unnecessary crises.
  • Valuing hours worked over employee productivity.
  • Making impulsive decisions without careful consideration.

Lessons from Experience

One recent example that comes to mind is a business I helped return to profitability. They achieved a significant increase in sales, breaking the £5 million barrier for the first time. However, this growth came at the cost of reduced margins and increased overheads, ultimately impacting profitability.

This experience serves as a reminder that success isn’t just about achieving short-term goals. It’s about sustainable growth and profitability in the long run. This is where a long-term partnership with an experienced consultant becomes invaluable. Check out this blog for Simple Steps for Increasing Business Profitability.

The Path to Sustainable Growth and Success

As a CMC Business Adviser, I aim to build lasting relationships with my clients by providing ongoing support to help them navigate complexities. These long-term partnerships help you stay on track, avoid pitfalls, and achieve sustained growth. With steady guidance through challenges, you can focus on the processes that drive lasting results – something the quick fixes and short-term professional engagements won’t deliver.
